MicroStrategy Rated Top Product for Business Intelligence Standardization

MicroStrategy® Incorporated (Nasdaq: MSTR), a leading worldwide provider of business intelligence software, today announced that The BI Survey 7, a leading independent survey of the business intelligence (BI) software market, has recognized MicroStrategy as the top product for BI standardization

McLean, Va. (April 17, 2008) –

MicroStrategy® Incorporated (Nasdaq: MSTR), a leading worldwide provider of business intelligence software, today announced that The BI Survey 7, a leading independent survey of the business intelligence (BI) software market, has recognized MicroStrategy as the top product for BI standardization. For the third consecutive year, MicroStrategy’s software was the top BI product selected by customers asked to choose one product for BI standardization.

Conducted by analyst Nigel Pendse and BARC, The Business Application Research Center, The BI Survey 7 compiled the BI experiences of nearly 2,000 respondents. The Survey asked BI customers using more than one product to select the product on which they would choose to standardize if forced to pick one, and to explain why. MicroStrategy was cited as the top product on which to standardize, with 91.3% of the respondents indicating they would select MicroStrategy as their enterprise BI standard.

To be a good candidate for standardization, a business intelligence product must be easy to use, suitable for a broad array of BI applications, and provide a wide range of BI functionality. When asked why they selected MicroStrategy, respondents cited its product features and Web deployability.

Preferred Products to Retain When Standardizing – Peer Group Comparison
MicroStrategy 91%
BusinessObjects 82%
SAP BW 77%
Cognos Analysis 76%
Hyperion Essbase 71%
Cognos Reporting 59%
Crystal Reports 43%

“Survey participants with multiple BI products continue to rank MicroStrategy as the top product to keep in a standardization exercise,” said Nigel Pendse, author of The BI Survey 7. “This tendency to choose MicroStrategy is a reflection of MicroStrategy’s broad range of capabilities and suitability for BI standardization. Large vendors that have consistently failed to deliver are seemingly being repaid with declining loyalty from their customers.”

“While it is common for companies to use several BI products, we are delighted that MicroStrategy continues to rank as the top product for standardization,” said Sanju Bansal, MicroStrategy’s COO. “The preference for MicroStrategy is a high compliment and a testament to MicroStrategy’s highly scalable, integrated architecture, which is well-suited for enterprise-wide business intelligence deployments.”

MicroStrategy will host a one-hour Webcast, “Selecting BI Technology for Enterprise Success – Lessons Learned from over 1,800 Companies’ Experiences,” on April 24, 2008, featuring Nigel Pendse and findings from The BI Survey 7. Industry Survey Finds MicroStrategy Customers Analyzed Largest Data Volumes

Seventh Consecutive Year MicroStrategy Ranks #1 in Data Volumes

McLean, Va., (April 03, 2008) –

MicroStrategy® Incorporated (Nasdaq: MSTR), a leading worldwide provider of business intelligence software, today announced that The BI Survey 7, a leading independent survey of the business intelligence (BI) software market, has recognized the large data handling capabilities of MicroStrategy’s software. For the seventh consecutive year, MicroStrategy customers reported the largest data volumes, as compared to customers of other business intelligence products, including BusinessObjects and Cognos.

The BI Survey 7, conducted annually by independent analyst Nigel Pendse, compiled real-world BI experiences of some 1,900 organizations and found that MicroStrategy customers accessed the largest data volumes by a significant margin. MicroStrategy customers are accessing a median of 258 Gigabytes (GB) in this latest survey. These median data volumes are larger, by more than a factor of 3, than that of customers of SAP BW, the second-place product, and larger, by a factor of 258, than that of customers of Cognos Analysis.

Median Reported Data Input Volumes of Peer Group
BI Vendor Input Data Volume (GB)
MicroStrategy 257.8
SAP BW 83.3
BusinessObjects 79.2
Cognos Reporting 26.0
Hyperion Essbase 4.2
Crystal Reports 2.7
Cognos Analysis 1.0

“MicroStrategy continues to be the clear leader in the enterprise-scale BI segment, with seven consecutive years of MicroStrategy sites reporting by far the largest data volumes of all vendors surveyed,” said Nigel Pendse, author of The BI Survey 7. “Despite most vendors claiming to be able to handle large, detailed applications, it is clear that only MicroStrategy’s customers are actually implementing such transaction-level BI databases.”

Cube-based OLAP products, such as those employed by certain Hyperion and Cognos products, inherently limit the data that can be analyzed. These products are optimized for analysis of summary level or small volumes of data, but are not suitable for transaction-level BI applications. In contrast, MicroStrategy’s proprietary Relational OLAP (ROLAP) technology allows interactive analysis of terabyte-sized relational databases.

“MicroStrategy is known for its data scalability and we are pleased that The BI Survey 7 has once again confirmed that our customers analyzed the largest amounts of data,” said Sanju Bansal, MicroStrategy’s COO. “MicroStrategy’s ROLAP technology delivers advanced query performance for the terabyte-sized data warehouses that are becoming more commonplace, enabling customers to efficiently access large data volumes to improve business performance.”

MicroStrategy will host a one-hour Webcast, “Selecting BI Technology for Enterprise Success – Lessons Learned from over 1,800 Companies’ Experiences,” on April 24, 2008, featuring Nigel Pendse and findings from The BI Survey 7. MicroStrategy Rated #1 in Customer Loyalty, According to The BI Survey 7

For Fourth Consecutive Year, MicroStrategy Customers Most Loyal

McLean, Va., (March 27, 2008) –

MicroStrategy® Incorporated (Nasdaq: MSTR), a leading worldwide provider of business intelligence software, today announced that in a comprehensive survey of companies using business intelligence (BI) software products, those using MicroStrategy are the most loyal. MicroStrategy had the highest customer loyalty of any BI vendor in The BI Survey for the fourth year in a row and an increase over the previous year.

Customer loyalty is an indication of how satisfied a customer is with a vendor’s products and services and is a crucial factor in vendor success. According to The BI Survey 7, a loyal customer is one that continues to use existing applications, purchases additional software to deploy existing applications more widely, uses the product in preference to others when implementing new applications, and favors the product if there is ever a requirement to reduce the number of BI suppliers.

The BI Survey is conducted annually by industry analyst Nigel Pendse and this year by BARC, The Business Application Research Center. The BI Survey is the most comprehensive independent survey of the BI market space and products. The BI Survey 7 compiled the real-world BI experiences of nearly 2,000 respondents across 60 countries.

Comparing a peer group of BI products reviewed in The BI Survey 7, the customer loyalty scores were as follows:
Overall Customer Loyalty Score
MicroStrategy .846
Cognos Reporting .725
Cognos Analysis .653
BusinessObjects .641
SAP BW .641
Oracle Hyperion Essbase .565

“It is a remarkable achievement that MicroStrategy was rated number one in customer loyalty for the fourth year in a row,” said Nigel Pendse, author of The BI Survey 7. “As in the past, the Survey found that well-known vendors with growth strategies based on acquisitions covering the entire BI spectrum have low, and in some cases declining, customer loyalty. MicroStrategy, with its single product architecture and organic growth, was at the top once again. The fact that no other product has achieved such high levels of consistency suggests that MicroStrategy’s customers are extremely loyal and see no alternative to the product.”

In the four years it has used its current methodology to calculate loyalty scores, The BI Survey has found that its customer loyalty score is a strong predictor of future product success or, in the case of some products, product failure. Specifically, long-established Oracle BI products, such as Oracle Discoverer, Oracle Express, and the Oracle OLAP Option, have had low and declining loyalty scores in the previous three years, to the point where they have so few active users remaining that the Survey could not find enough of them to analyze their success. “We were quite surprised at the low loyalty scores achieved by some well-known products when we first started calculating it in this way, but it is interesting that the sample sizes of such products subsequently fell sharply, so this score has turned out to be a good predictor of success and failure in the BI market,” said Nigel Pendse.

“We are delighted that MicroStrategy’s customer loyalty rating continues to increase and that it remains at the top of all BI vendors in The BI Survey,” said Sanju Bansal, MicroStrategy’s COO. “The loyalty of our customers is a testament to the high quality of our software and the business value that it provides. Customers today are cautious about IT investments and become loyal only after they have successfully used the technology and received tangible benefits.”

MicroStrategy will host a one-hour Webcast, “Selecting BI Technology for Enterprise Success – Lessons Learned from over 1,800 Companies’ Experiences,” on April 24, 2008, featuring Nigel Pendse and findings from The BI Survey 7.
