SAS Boosts Popular Business Intelligence Servers
Customers drive enhancements to SAS® Enterprise BI Server, SAS® BI Server
CARY, N.C. (September 11, 2012) – SAS’ flagship business intelligence server products now offer more display, design and navigation features than ever. The latest versions of SAS Enterprise BI Server and SAS BI Server also feature new reporting and dashboard options, including enhanced customization, added data filters and more, to better showcase insights from data assets.
“SAS BI technologies anchor many customers’ business analytics strategies. Their suggestions for how SAS could provide even greater benefit have been invaluable,” said Jim Davis, SAS Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “This round of enhancements is clearly customer-focused.”
Key members of the SAS Business Intelligence product family, SAS Enterprise BI Server and SAS BI Server now offer increased options for conditional highlighting, drilldown, headers and footers, display items based on browser regional settings, and other new features.
SAS® Business Intelligence helps Valance control health care costs
Valence Health depends on SAS Enterprise BI Server both for its own reporting and to provide powerful self-service reporting for its customers, US health care providers.
SAS Enterprise BI Server is pivotal to Valence’s infrastructure, which helps groups of independent doctors and hospitals leverage economies of scale from clinical integration. At the same time, it helps them manage risk, bolster revenues and improve the quality of health care to patients.
“It is an absolute requirement in the current market that we provide our clients with Web-based self-service reporting. They can examine patient cost, disease management, risk stratification, case management and other information at their convenience,” said Steve Tutewohl, Valence Senior Vice President of Analytics. “SAS Enterprise BI Server empowers our customers to analyze how Valence has helped lower costs.”
Related SAS offerings
In addition to SAS BI Server products, the SAS Business Intelligence family also includes highly regarded SAS Office Analytics and SAS Visual Analytics.

SAS® Gives Orange County Dept. of Education Clear View of Finance and Operations
OCDE will be able to integrate and analyze data
CARY, N.C. (June 07, 2012) – Serving more than 500,000 students, California’s Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) will use SAS Business Intelligence and SAS Financial Management to improve budgeting, planning and forecasting for 28 school districts, four community college districts and four regional occupational programs. OCDE will be able to integrate and analyze financial, payroll, human resources, student and other data to better understand operations and costs.
Many disparate data sources have made it difficult for OCDE to get a clear view of operations in the past. “Historically, data living in silos has made it challenging to see the total picture,” said Louis Mazzarini, OCDE Director of Information Technology. “SAS brings experience at breaking down those silos, and that is important for OCDE.”
OCDE has broad responsibilities and requires technology that can capture and analyze all relevant data. With more than 1,400 full- and part-time employees, OCDE is also charged with providing cost-effective, centralized services. SAS Business Intelligence will integrate data from the districts and provide self-service reporting and analysis. Decision makers at the districts will spend less time looking for answers and more time driving strategic decisions. Using SAS Financial Management to consolidate planning and historical information on demand, OCDE will deliver the latest information to decision makers and regulatory agencies.
With more than 3,000 K-12 and higher education customers in more than 100 countries, and education specialists on six continents, SAS serves the education industry by delivering software solutions, strategic services and academic programs that spark innovation and expand educational opportunities.

Los Angeles County Using SAS® to Spot Child Care Benefits Fraud, Conspiracies
System has generated more than 200 fraud referrals, while helping prioritize and enhance the review of cases
CARY, N.C. (May 09, 2012) – Los Angeles County’s Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) is using SAS to help fight organized fraud rings and individual perpetrators that prey on benefits meant for the community’s most vulnerable. Using fraud-fighting analytics and data mining tools from SAS, L.A. County uncovered more than 200 probable fraud cases and busted ongoing conspiracies to defraud the California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs) Child Care benefits program.
The county provides financial and employment assistance to qualified families with minor children. The SAS Fraud Framework for Government helps ensure that only those truly in need of those benefits receive them.
“Fraudulent activity reduces funds available to those truly in need and hurts public confidence in a vital program,” said Michael J. Sylvester II, DPSS Assistant Director and Department Chief Information Officer. “Reducing fraud and catching those responsible builds public confidence; the Data Mining Solution (DMS) that L.A. County and SAS developed together is critical to that effort.”
Finding fraudsters, revealing conspiracies, supporting investigations
Alerts generated by the DMS have delivered more than 200 fraud referrals that could have otherwise gone unnoticed for an extended length of time by relying strictly on traditional fraud detection processes. Additionally, using SAS Social Network Analysis, DPSS Welfare Fraud Prevention and Investigations (WFP&I) uncovered two conspiracy rings comprising 16 cases much earlier, significantly reducing the duration of fraudulent activities. Social network analysis provides investigators instant access to a network of child care recipients and providers, saving hours of casework preparation.
“With a single mouse click, SAS provided leads to additional evidence that could have taken weeks or months to uncover, including linking my suspect with two in other cases,” said one investigator.
Another investigator, who was wrapping up a 10-person investigation, entered the main suspect’s name and discovered seven potential co-conspirators.
Predictive models detect anomalies
SAS generates high risk scores based on predictive models and peer group analysis that detect behavioral anomalies in child care service usage, which decreases false positive cases assigned to investigators. The scores help prioritize cases with a high suspicion level and identify high value targets. Social network analysis detects individuals likely to commit fraud, helps identify collusive fraud rings and identifies companion cases to ongoing investigations.
In addition to SAS Fraud Framework for Government and SAS Social Network Analysis, L.A. County applies predictive analytics and data mining, rules management and forecasting. SAS Business Intelligence generates a portal for monitoring, reporting and sharing information on fraudulent cases.
SAS hosts the county’s data at the SAS Analytics Lab for State and Local Government, which partners with state and local leaders to improve government services with advanced analytics technology. There, nearly 300 mostly doctoral-level SAS experts devise technological solutions to government issues such as fraud, tax collection, public safety, pension risk and education.
Successful pilot
Before the system went live, SAS and L.A. County conducted a data mining pilot that achieved 85 percent accuracy in detecting collusive fraud rings. Estimates of cost avoidance from new fraud referrals, earlier detection and increased efficiency totaled $6.8 million.
“The successful pilot resulted from a strong public-private partnership between SAS and L.A. County,” said Paula Henderson, Vice President of the SAS State and Local Government Practice. “SAS fraud experts and the analytics lab work closely with the county to ensure the live system remains effective in identifying fraudsters and protecting taxpayer money.”
SAS is used in all 50 state governments to transform their operations to deliver the right services, at the right time, with the appropriate resources. SAS offers a wide array of data integration, business intelligence and analytics solutions, and collaborates with government to create innovative offerings tailored to specific departmental and agency goals.

Next Generation Reporting Solution to Turn Employee Interactions into Business Insights
KITCHENER, Ontario (March 27, 2012) – IGLOO Software, the leading provider of social business software in the cloud, today announced that it has partnered with MicroStrategy® Incorporated, a leading worldwide provider of business intelligence (BI) software, to integrate reporting and analytics into IGLOO’s social business suite. The solution will allow IGLOO customers to track user participation, influence, activity and engagement in a social intranet or extranet.
As social technologies are introduced to business, workflow and employee interactions become more and more visible. The resulting activity and dialogue produces unprecedented volumes of data around social behaviors and actions. The addition of an analytics module provides organizations with the ability to identify areas where social interactions are most effective and model those more broadly across the entire organization to improve the effectiveness of team collaboration.
“Traditionally, engaging in a dialogue with employees and gathering deep insights from those interactions was achieved through an annual opinion survey,” said Dan Latendre, CEO of IGLOO Software. “IGLOO’s social business suite provides a new type of visibility into the collaborative conversations and activities that occur within an organization. For many companies, uncovering this insight is a game-changer. With our new social business suite, we will enable our customers to more effectively manage and optimize their talent and their ongoing interactions with customers and partners.”
MicroStrategy is one of the leading business intelligence companies focused on developing powerful technologies that capitalize on Big Data, Mobile, Social and Cloud trends. IGLOO will integrate MicroStrategy’s BI platform into the IGLOO administrative console in order to enrich the community management and reporting process. A dashboard of indicators will be presented graphically, including activity, contribution types and top content. Over time, new applications will be built to apply social analytics in a number of innovative ways that include:
- Creating a more personalized user experience that delivers proactive recommendations of relevant people to connect with and content to explore
- Adding detailed analytics that gauge employee sentiment and measure the effectiveness of project teams in order to understand its impact on business performance
“MicroStrategy is pleased to provide the reporting and analytics platform for IGLOO’s cloud-based social business suite,” said Sanju Bansal, MicroStrategy Chief Operating Officer. “To meet accelerating customer demand for critical cloud solutions, Value Added Resellers like IGLOO Software are choosing MicroStrategy’s platform and easily integrating its powerful reporting and dashboard capabilities into their innovative cloud-based services.”
“Gensquared provides a highly customized integration between the MicroStrategy platform, IGLOO and existing data living outside the IGLOO social business suite, allowing customers to perform powerful analysis right within their intranet or extranet,” said Patrick Siconolfi, Principal at Gensquared Inc. “We are excited to be a part of a solution that brings together both MicroStrategy and IGLOO to deliver on this important customer need.”
The first phase of reporting will be made available to all IGLOO customers in the Spring ’12 release.

Logistic Specialties Deploys LogiXML to Streamline Operations, Expand Customer Offerings, Increase Profits
Use Case Shows True Power of Embedded Business Intelligence
MCLEAN, Va. (November 15, 2011) – LogiXML, the pioneer of web-based business intelligence (BI) software, today announced that Logistic Specialties, Inc. (LSI), a leading provider of business development consulting and logistical support services, drastically improved its operational efficiencies, built multiple BI applications in record time, and increased its bottom line—all using Logi Info, http://pages.logixml.com/Info-Video.html.
LSI serves government agencies and commercial entities by specializing in managing and fulfilling procurement bids and commercial contracts. The success of their business is dependent on their ability to respond quickly to and win RFPs. Prior to working with LogiXML, most of LSI’s inefficiencies were rooted in a manual RFP response system, which included maintaining a huge Microsoft Excel database with years of historical records that was rife with inaccuracies.
Using Logi Info, LSI built a commodities tracking system to support their RFP process with only one database developer. Additionally, LSI used Logi Info to develop a set of business-support tools, including a helpdesk system, research request system, mass mailing tool, purchase request system, analysis data cubes, and time and activity tracking—all in 40 percent less time than with conventional development methods. What’s more, Logi Info’s agility enables LSI to support these systems with a staff half the size of their competitors’. By improving organizational processes, LSI has been able to win more than 50 percent of contracts that they bid on, and 60 percent of the dollars within their target market.
“We evaluated several vendors, including traditional BI products and supply chain management solutions and found various shortcomings, including pricing models that charged a percentage of our profits, a lack of vital functionality, and required implementation assistance from costly consultants,” said Mark de Amici, CTO, LSI. “We chose Logi Info because it is fast to implement, easy to modify and maintain, flexible enough to enable workflow between multiple teams and systems, and is highly reliable.”
When LSI started the BI procurement process, they initially wanted middleware to talk to multiple databases. Logi Info has evolved beyond that; Logi Info’s database neutrality enabled LSI to link to databases they were previously unable to, gathering information from multiple places and integrating them. As LSI and their data grows, the company now has a solution in place that will allow them to track and scale various operational components of their business, including project management, RFP management, risk management and financial analysis.
“More and more companies are recognizing that they need their BI software to be able to do more and change directions in order to stay competitive,” said Brett Jackson, CEO, LogiXML. “LSI has built impressive BI applications in a remarkably short amount of time using our solutions which have given them an edge in the marketplace. They are an example of what can be accomplished with agile BI software.”
Logi Info is the fastest way for developers and IT to create and deliver BI applications to any desktop or mobile device. Creating sophisticated applications with Logi Info takes only a fraction of the time of required by traditional BI solutions. Logi Info does this by providing a code-free development environment that dramatically reduces the effort and cost of creating and maintaining BI applications.

Tableau Makes Business Intelligence Faster and Mobile
Tableau 6.1 adds optimized mobile support for iPads, faster data performance, new maps, and French and German versions
SEATTLE (July 31, 2011) – Tableau Software, the global leader in rapid-fire business intelligence (BI) software, today announced the general availability of Tableau 6.1. The new version delivers automatic touch and gesture optimized support for the Apple iPad, whether views are accessed via Tableau’s new iPad App or via Mobile Safari. In addition, Tableau enhanced its in-memory analytics engine with increased query and loading performance. People can also rapidly update existing extracts in Tableau’s data engine. Other improvements include localization and new maps.
“myPad or yours?” – create once and instantly get Tableau on the go
All Tableau views, from both Tableau Server and Tableau Public, are now optimized for touch and gesture experiences when accessed on the iPad. Creating interactive dashboards and reports is still fast, fun, and easy; now those same results are immediately available on the iPad. There is no need for up-front design changes or maintaining multiple versions of workbooks to serve multiple platforms. When a view is accessed from the iPad, Tableau automatically detects and optimizes the user experience. Controls such as filters, parameters, sliders, scrolling, and zoom & pan respond based on touch. The new iPad app, available in the Apple App Store at http://itunes.com/apps/tableaumobile, makes browsing content, accessing favorite reports, and collaborating and commenting quick and easy. An online video showing the new capabilities can be seen here http://www.tableausoftware.com/data-to-ipad-in-2-minutes.
“The ability of Tableau’s mobile BI solution to answer questions wherever they strike is incredibly empowering,” said John Abdo, who is responsible for all web analytics for Cafe Press, one of the world’s leading websites empowering people and organizations to create, buy and sell customized merchandise online. Abdo has been an active participant in the Tableau 6.1 beta. “It’s the same thing Tableau did when they gave non-technical users access to a treasure trove of data.”
According to recent research from Gartner “Forecast Alert: IT Spending, Worldwide, 1Q11 Update,” more widespread adoption of tablets among enterprises will help drive IT spending growth this year. The analysts predict that worldwide media tablet spending is projected to reach $29.4 billion in 2011, up from $9.6 billion in 2010. Global spending on media tablets is forecast to increase at an annual average rate of 52 per cent through 2015.
“BI output has been available on mobile devices for many years, but has had limited success due to the display form factor, computing and memory limitations of handheld devices and the cost of Internet bandwidth. However, the current generation of touch-driven tablets and smartphones is set to make BI content usable and compelling by offering a rich, location-aware and intuitive experience. BI content plus ubiquitous smart mobile devices should equal broader adoption,” commented James Richardson, Research Director at Gartner in his research note, “Findings From EMEA Business Intelligence Summit: Mobile BI Needs Metrics.”
An even faster in-memory data engine
The Tableau data engine, Tableau’s next generation in-memory analytics solution, has been enhanced. Not only does it load and query faster and support bigger data, but people can now incrementally update Tableau extracts quickly with one click or via an automated scheduler. Creating Tableau Extracts is significantly faster with v6.1. For example, loading 6.4 million rows from a file now takes less than 25% of the time it used to.
The data engine lets people speed up the performance of massive corporate databases or integrate large files on the fly. For example, daily visitors to an ecommerce site can result in millions of new records in website log files. With Tableau, those companies can keep their data sets current as they rapidly create and share powerful analytical views and reports.
“The need for speed drives today’s workforce. People have to be able to get interactive access to their dashboards and reports anywhere anytime, even if it’s in a conference room down the hall from their offices. Tableau 6.1 is filled with innovations that help people take charge of massive data and use it regardless of where they are,” said Dan Jewett, Tableau Software’s vice president, product management.
6.1 new features
As well as mobile support and the enhanced data engine, the release of Tableau 6.1 adds a host of other new functionality including French and German versions, more mapping options, and new features to create brilliant visualizations and dashboards. Detailed information is available at http://www.tableausoftware.com/new-features/6.1.
- Localization and Maps – French and German versions of Tableau Desktop, and enhanced geocoding mean that asking “where?” yields richer answers
- Fresh, fast data – Faster extract creation, incremental updates, data appends, extract history, database impersonation and Teradata improvements make it easier to be up-to-the-minute and secure with all your data
- More tools for authors – more legend options, links on dashboard images and the ability to view data anywhere allow for more control
“The launch of French and German versions highlights the start of our localization drive, translating not just the software text, but a range of other map and locale data as well,” Jewett continued. “Combined with several other innovative new features, this release showcases the vision we have for the Tableau suite worldwide.”
Prior to launch Tableau 6.1 was demoed at Tableau Software’s First Annual European Customer Conference and tested by a group of over 1,000 customers in beta access program.

SAS customers share enrollment management, institutional research successes at AIR forum
Business intelligence supports degree tracking, student success, early warning systems
CARY, N.C. (May 23, 2011) – Student enrollment and retention are the lifeblood of higher education institutions. Ensuring those students earn degrees in an appropriate timeframe keeps it flowing. Two customers discuss how they use SAS® software for institutional research to tackle these critical challenges at this week’s Association for Institutional Research (AIR) annual forum in Toronto.
In separate presentations, university representatives will discuss how implementing a reporting data warehouse has expanded reporting capabilities, through UCF’s use of the SAS® Enterprise Intelligence Suite for Education. Supported by SAS Business Intelligence and SAS Data Management servers, a UCF information delivery portal provides secure, campus wide access to multi-dimensional, detailed enrollment reports on current and historical enrollment trends.
Demonstrating institutional and student success requires degree data. How many were awarded, the breakdown by college or department, the diversity of degree recipients, number of minors or certificates awarded, etc. In the second presentation, members of UCF’s Institutional Knowledge Management office will show how they converted legacy, static degree data into a graphic-based, trend-focused degree application that answers these critical questions and more.
Institutional research and technology experts from Western Kentucky University will present their Kentucky AIR Best Paper award winner on the university’s early-warning system for enrollment, persistence and student success. In a separate presentation, they will share best practices and lessons learned before, throughout and after last year’s successful launch of a business intelligence portal.
“These two universities are mastering the use of data to help meet their most important missions: enroll quality students and ensure their success,” said Armistead Sapp, head of the SAS Education Practice. “We’ve learned so much working with UCF and WKU over the years. Session attendees will not be disappointed.”
In addition, a SAS analytics expert will discuss supporting institutional research through analytics, including how to seamlessly integrate data across multiple platforms, provide insightful reporting and utilize the power of analytics. Attendees will learn how data can be surfaced in dashboards with drillable reports, and how analytics can predict trends, enabling proactive decision making.
With more than 3,000 college, university and business school customers in 126 countries and education specialists on every continent, SAS serves higher education by delivering software solutions, strategic services and academic programs that spark innovation and expand educational opportunities.
